Are the calorie counts on cardio machines accurate?
Kath: I rarely take note of the calorie burns on the machines so I'm not quite sure of the exact numbers compared to my heart rate monitor. After 30 minutes on the Stairmaster I am usually at about 275 kcal burned and I think I've seen the monitor report numbers like 350-400, so it's pretty far off. The machines tend to overestimate a lot, sorry to bring bad news! Calories burned on the machines is entirely based on the type of machine (such as arms or no arms) and the resistance you have.Kath: I rarely take note of the calorie burns on the machines so I'm not quite sure of the exact numbers compared to my heart rate monitor.

Q : I don't have any cardio equipment at home, so how can you train my cardiovascular system?
A : Treadmills and elliptical machines are excellent tools for cardiovascular training but they are far from the only means! Cardiovascular training is effectively achieved through repetitive movements of large muscles. Your trainer will choose the methods necessary to give you the proper cardiovascular workout, often using your bodyweight with added resistance from wrist weights and ankle weights.Kath: Calories burned on the machines is entirely based on the type of machine (such as arms or no arms) and the resistance you have. Running on the treadmill, I usually am around 160 BPM and on the elliptical anywhere from 150-160.

What cardiovascular equipment will be available?
There will be eight treadmills, five elliptical trainers, three recumbent bikes, two upright bikes, and two stair climbers. All cardiovascular equipment is outfitted with heart rate monitor handles.Kath: I rarely take note of the calorie burns on the machines so I'm not quite sure of the exact numbers compared to my heart rate monitor. So for me, running is harder, but the elliptical is a VERY close second.Kath: Calories burned on the machines is entirely based on the type of machine (such as arms or no arms) and the resistance you have.
